[Review] Gyakuten Saiban live action movie

Been wanting to post about this for a while.

Watched the Gyakuten Saiban movie... and it's fun. There were some parts that had been changed to fit the movie, but I don't think it should matter much. The minor details. You can always replay the original games~

So glad there was actually someone who did the softsub for the movie and did it pretty well--not like the other one that did a poor job of it by just copy paste the script from Ace Attorney game and using the NA localization names. I mean for the games and the localized AA books it's a different matter (yet I had to disagree on the localisation of the GS manga. Lotsa of the manga OCs in the mangas and if you didn't change their names as well and change some other things it's weird for the AA characters to interact with the GS characters!). I know how some insisted that the AA version was the only way to go... but don't forget GS exist. Hate it last time when I got these 'complaints' about why my GS fic character did not have their AA names. Like duh~ I already stated that I was writing based on GS obviously  the names would be Naruhodou, Mitsurugi and such. Sheesh.

Anyway back to the movie. Am glad that there's people that did a proper sub for this. Because seriously, it's a GS movie with the Japanese GS setting. Unless some other company wanna make a localized dub on this.

Movie starts with a flashback of the DL6's case where Ayasato Maiko summonned Mitsurugi Shin (Gregory Edgeworth)... before moving to the present. We get to see a brief scene of Naruhodou's (Wright) first case (defending Yahari (Larry)) with a slight change. Aka Chihiro-san (Mia) not being present with Naruhodou during the trial and only appeared to save the day at the end of the trial to point out a contradiction that would acquit Yahari and accuse Hoshio Yamano (Sahwit) to be the true murderer. I like how they actually tried to have some of the outrageous witness outburst on film. I mean... Yamano actually pulling out a wig/hair and throwing it at Naruhodou was amusing to see... and  Aiuchi (Payne) was strangely funny.

The Naruhodou's second case was changed in that there was no mention of Nihoshi Saburo-san (Will Powers) being accused of murder and the defendant had been Himegami Sakura (Dee Vasquez) and that she was represented by some random attorney. Though the detail of the case matched the second case nicely.

Naruhodou's third case (Chihiro-san's murder) was almost the same as in game... though I suppose some small details had to be changed to shorten the amount of time spent on it. There was no Umeyo Shouchiku (April May) being the witness... and that role was passed to Konaka Masaru (Redd White). The rest was relatively the same... though it seemed aside from Naruhodou, no one noticed the change in Mayoi's (Maya) appearance when she summoned Chihiro. And still... the violent outbursts, XD.

Guess the focus had all been for the the fourth case the Turnabout Goodbyes. Most of the stuff were straight from the games aside from the parts where they were changes like Naruhodou/Mayoi never met Haine (Yogi) after the second day trial, no scene at the records room where Karuma attacked them and took away an important evidence, some other stuffs that GS/AA fans could note. Though the part where Sayuri's ghost appeared before Haine with her head inside a bird cage was a bit creepy. Suddenly it felt as if you're watching a ghost movie.

But most importantly, they changed the location of the place where DL6 happened. There's no earthquake reference and instead of the elevator, the incident happened inside the Evidence Room. Which is too bad... I had wanted to see Saito Takumi as Reiji to hide under the table out of phobia over earthquakes. But I suppose they opted that out... and I'm not surprised. I mean...after last years Tohoku Earthquake I suppose they wanna avoid any mentions or scenes of any quakes. Also the change the flashback part on the classroom trial. Being that the kid that had their money stolen was NOT Reiji. Why??????? That's important! Cos before that trial the three of them were not friends!

Overall it's a great movie that both fans and non-fans of GS/AA could enjoy. Love how they manage to imagine a system to virtually display all the evidence in the court. Neat. And I love how the casts looks and costumes were made to be as close to the games as possible. Some people might argue that the movie looked like a cosplay movie--but this is a live adaptation of a game argument invalid. And I love how the casts are chosen so nicely that they sounded almost the same as their game counterparts. And some of the small details...

Love the brief instances where the original GS theme can be heard in the background, as well as Garyuu Wave's Tonosaman theme. Saito Takumi really played Reiji so well down to his emo faces. XD. Narimiya also... on playing Naruhodo. <3

Pretty amusing that they ended the movie with a small scene where the defendant was the actor for Ninja Nanja (Isao Fujimino (Juan Corrida)). Which was never in the game... yes pretty funny.
