Empty Joy
Title: Empty Joy
Series: 태양의 후예 / Descendants of the Sun
Characters: Kim Gibeom, mentions of Seo Daeyoung, Yoo Sijin
Summary:He'd waited long to tell those men the great news of him passing his test with flying colours. But then the Alpha Team returned, bearing grave news.
--------------
It was supposed to be a happy moment for him. He had been waiting these few months to tell them the great news. But when the time came, it wasn't how he imagined it could be.
He recalled a few months ago, how alone he felt... when he watched all the other test takers being cheered by friends and families, to give them the courage to be able to do the best in the exam. He remembered feeling a bit lonely because of that. Since he had no family or girlfriend; he even lost contact with the few people he was close with at the orphanage so there wouldn't be anyone by his side to cheer on him. But then they appeared to cheer him up, the five men who have grown more to become part of his family. He was happy.
Because of them, he tried his best to pass and excel in his test.
He found out that they received a new mission and had to go away for a while when he came out after taking the test.
It should be fine, he used to tell himself. He'll see them soon, once they're done with their mission.
When he looked back, it was really an odd turn of event. All of this started because of that one incident when he came into contact with the two people.
He thought that leaving the gang would be simple. After all, it's not as if the group was really that big, like those Mafia or Yakuza or any other big criminal groups. At most, the worst crime that any member of the gang had done was just those petty thefts and some financial scams. You'd think it'd be easy to leave the group and live a more decent life.
But no, he was wrong. Just when he thought he gathered enough to pay the sum demanded of him in order to leave the group, the leader of the gang would then change his mind and raise the price. It came to a point that it seemed as if all of his efforts would be in vain.
So he thought about stealing the coupons from that popular restaurant. Since it was a popular eatery he should be able to get some money by selling the coupons he stole.
But that didn't quite work out right since Sergeant Seo and Captain Yoo just had to be nearby when he attempted the theft.
Gibeom smiled weakly as he recalled the memory. Back then he used to resent the two officers for being in his way. But now...
"Getting beaten doesn't work. Paying them money doesn't either. How did you... get out of it?"
"I ran away to a place where could never find me."
"Where is that?"
"I became a soldier."
Because of the two men, his life had changed greatly. No amount of words could describe how much gratefulness he has for those two men.
Without expecting any reward, Sergeant Seo had claimed him as a 'younger brother' and took him in as part of his own. Alongside Captain Yoo, the two men had taken care of him like a family he never has. And because of them, he ended up having a lot more brother figures and sister figures who would guide him towards a more decent and honourable life.
There's nothing more he wanted to do than doing something that can make the two men be proud of him.
But then the news about their deaths came, and he couldn't be anymore sorrowful.
The joy he once felt about excelling his GED test had turned into an indescribable sorrow.
