Azure Night [1/2]

Title: Azure Night
Series: 아스달 연대기 / Arthdal Chronicles
Characters: Asa Hon, mentions of Ragaz
Summary: The Neanthals and Saram had lived centuries apart due to the many difference between them. "The blue bloods and the red bloods must never be mixed." Perhaps there was a reason why that line shouldn't be crossed.

-------------------------------

Her first encounter with a Neanthal happened by chance when she was really young. She was practising the sacred dance by herself at night, before noticing a movement somewhere in the woods near the White Peak Mountain temple. It intrigued herself so much, that she ventured out by herself to find out the source of the movement.

It was reckless of her to do so, to not heed the words of the elders who warned her of the night creatures that walked freely in the dark. But she was still a child and she was curious, and back then her curiosity overpowered her fears and dare she say it that she felt bold? So she sneaked out towards the forest.

And lo... just when she thought she was imagining things and turn back towards the temple, a young boy dropped down in front of her without warning. Except, it wasn't just a normal boy or any other Saram.

As the faint moonlight shone over the two of them, young Asa Hon could see the other person's appearances clearly. Blue eyes and blue lips, with animal skins and various feathers adorning his body... a boy crouched on all fours facing her, barefooted.

It was a young Neanthal boy.

That was the first time she encountered a Neanthal, and that encounter would forever change her life.

Since then, Asa Hon started having a secret past time whenever she had any spare time. She would steal out of her chambers, and sneak out to find that Neanthal boy again to try to get to know him better. The Neanthal boy wasn't quite interested in returning her gesture and often tried to avoid her whenever possible. But Asa Hon was never one to give up so easily and continued to pursue the boy.

As the years passed by, the boy started to let out on her. And gradually, the two of them started their unlikely friendship.

Along with that friendship... Asa Hon began to learn the language of the Neanthals.

Asa Hon sighed softly by herself as she watch over the sleeping Neanthal children that they managed to save ever since the great fire in Atturad. Since that night, she and Ragaz had lived in hiding with the children in order to protect themselves and avoid being detected by the other Saram.

She sighed sorrowfully again as she thought of the children, as well as the past.

If only she hadn't tried to get closer to the Neanthals and learn of their ways. If only she hadn't told the elders that she was able to converse with the Neanthals and established good relations with the blue-blooded clan.

Perhaps this whole tragedy wouldn't have happened. Perhaps Ragaz and the children would still be with the rest of their clans now, not having to worry about their lives.

If only everything that happened was just a horrid nightmare. But it's not.

Asa Hon bitterly regrets her past follies.
