Frantic

Title: Frantic
Series: The Fiery Priest/열혈사제
Characters: Kim Hae-il/Father Michael, Park Gyeongseon/Angela
Summary: He never thought his heart could race so much.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

"I'm only gonna ask this for the last time. Who is it?"

He almost thought his heart would suddenly stop beating then and there. Why—who on earth would want Ms Park to die? Who would go so far as to have her killed?

Was it because she helped him last time? Or was there another reason?

Yet despite how chaotic his mind had been Hae-il continued wrapping the Russian assassin's body with tape, as if he'd planned to do that all along. As soon as he'd written the word [Culprit] on the guy he sped towards the emergency exit. As he sped down the stairs he pulled out his phone and speed-dialled Yo-han's number.

"Hello, Father Kim..." Yo-han answered almost immediately. Thank goodness he actually bothered to get the kid's number before.

"Yo-han, are you at your part-time job at the convenience store? I need to ask you something."

"Unh... Father Kim. Actually right now, I'm doing another job at a new place." Hae-il almost tripped on his own foot hearing that reply. He was hoping that Yo-han could be his eyes and tell him if he saw Ms Park at the store. But if Yo-han wasn't there...

Lord, please don't let anything bad happening to her...

Yet, there might still be something he could do—Hae-il made a big jump on the last step before bursting out towards the parking lot.

"Yo-han. You're familiar with the people frequenting that store, isn't it? Do you know which floor was Ms Park's apartment?"

There were some odd background noises from Yo-han's side and he almost caught a surprised gasp coming from the kid.

"Yes, I know her apartment was near—wait, why?"

"I'll explain later! The old lady's life might be in danger right now!"

Perhaps Yo-han did catch his sense of urgency as the kid immediately answered.

"Father Kim, I'm not sure which floor her apartment was on but the building manager should know. I'll text you the number..."

"Thanks, Yo-han," he said quickly before getting on his bike. He just hoped that he could reach her place on time!

It was a risky gamble since he only had a rough estimate of the layout of the building and the floor Ms Park's apartment was in. But thankfully, there were other apartment buildings nearby and Ms Park's apartment was on one of the higher floors. So with the equipment and the experiences he had accumulated in the past, he should be able to...

Hae-il took out his binoculars and trained it towards the apartment building across him.

Her apartment better be facing his side in order for him to notice anything!

And just as the thought crossed his mind one of the lights from an apartment on the tenth floor suddenly turned on—Hae-il immediately turned his binoculars towards that particular balcony. He caught the sight of the sliding door closing and as expected, he saw a glimpse of Gyeongseon for a few seconds. So she was still fine—he stopped himself once the realisation hit him.

Was the old lady the kind of person who'd leave the balcony open like that?

Logically, no one in their right mind would've left their balcony open like that... no matter how high the apartment was. Even more at this height, the difference of air pressure and wind speed would make it unwise for anyone to leave it open like that without care. Unless...

Hae-il immediately grabbed his grappling hook and the rest of his equipment as he went to find a way to get himself across the building.

He got it at one try—which was actually amazing considering it's been more than five years since he's gotten involved in any operation involving him having to enter a building at such height as well as from another building. Half of him was also glad that the glass doors weren't made from plexiglass or anything else that could've made it tricky for him to break through the window.

Since that could've ruined his element of surprise...

Hae-il rolled over to his feet and stood up; all the while keeping his eyes on Gyeongseon. She was taken by surprise at his arrival but was unhurt. He turned his gaze slowly at the attacker as he caught sight of the small curved blade on the attacker's right hand.

So he managed to arrive at the nick of time.

Just as he was able to stand at his full height the man charged at him when he tried to sneak a glance towards Gyeongseon again. Hae-il immediately swerved to avoid the blade before throwing a few punches and blocked some move from his attacker. The attacker swung his blade towards him as Hae-il ducked and grabbed a nearby corded phone before rolling over towards the nearby couch.

Another swing of the knife missed him by an inch before he rolled away again and blocked another hit that came right after. Hae-il retaliated by using the phone as his weapon before getting up and landed another punch at the attacker. The attacker swung his knife again at him so Hae-il gave him a few more hits and swerved away again; trying to get a chance to grab the knife and turn things around.

After a few more hits and miss, he managed to grab the wrist that was holding the knife and threw the man towards the counter. Once Hae-il had the man pinned against the counter he gave the man another hit as the attacker released the knife he was holding. He took that chance to check the man's wrist under the glove and true enough, he saw the same tattoo on the man's wrist. Similar as with the man who attacked Assemblyman Park.

Without warning, Hae-il felt something crashing against his head as he instinctively back away in a daze. The moment he looked up, Gyeongseon's attacker had already reached the door and ran away.

Hae-il turned his glance towards Gyeongseon and rushed over to her side.

"Are you okay, old lady?" he asked worriedly.

Gyeongseon kept staring at him in silence as he could almost hear her every breath. For a second, he was almost concerned that the attacker might have managed to hurt her anyway. But then Gyeongseon suddenly fainted as he lunged to grab her body.

As Hae-il continued staring at Gyeongseon's face he became growingly aware of how much his heart was still racing rapidly.

Thank goodness he managed to arrive on time or he could've lost the old lady tonight.
