[Review] Gintama Live Action movie
Gintama Live Action movie + Mitsuba-Hen
So... last Saturday I got to watch the premier of Gintama live action movie. Have to say I enjoyed it a lot.

Well, if you're familiar with Gintama, you should be expecting the usual parodies and in-jokes and fourth wall breaking jokes to be in this. Well, the movie doesn't disappoint. If you love the anime/manga, you'll love the movie.
The movie's plot was focused on my most favourite arc of the series, the Benizakura Arc. You'd think that after the arc was released in manga, later in anime series, and then re-released as a full motion animated movie with slight changes, you'd think we'll get tired of the arc. Nope, not a chance. I love the fact I got to see the same plotline in this new movie. But of course, since we're talking about Gintama here, surely you don't think they will just start from that point, eh? No, we get to see a bit of the live action version of the first scene of Gintama (Mitsuba-hen got this scene too anyway, but the anime did it many times anyway). Aka the opening scene that introduced the series, the Amanto... Shinpachi's introduction and of course... Gintoki's first appearance. There's even a parody of GTO live action as the movie showed Gintoki ride his scooter away along with a theme song, sang by Oguri/Gintoki that totally had that Sorimachi's Poison feel on it. I love that so much lol. Never expected that GTO parody to happen!
After the usual fourth wall break scene (the trio appeared as a chibi 3D version of their animated selves) the plot jumped towards the point prior to the arc's beginning. In general, the movie's plot mostly ran like the original plot. But of course, some gags would happen slightly different than in manga or anime. And some parts were changed in the movie in order to fit in with the limitations of the movie. Like, none of the Joui members aside from Zura and Eli made appearance (they were replaced with the Shinsengumi thus they got some more new scene that don't appear in manga), no scenes with Elizabeth disguising as a samurai, the scene where Gintoki left Tae to fight Shinsuke was changed a bit, in which the scene followed the manga version rather than anime. And some lines spoken during the time Tetsuko, Kagura, Shinpachi were trying to attack Nizou were switched around. The lines didn't differ much, but in movie... it was Shinpachi who spoke Kagura's line and vice versa. Some of extra new shinsengumi bits are based on the film version of the anime as well as some other bits from the film that weren't in the serials.
There are a few new scenes like Gengai appearing and Char appearing and Nausicaa too.. but any actual different scene changes in the movie were still based on some of the non-Benizakura arc plot. The movie really stayed true to the manga! And all of the casts are perfect in their roles.
If there was something that could have made it better, it would be if DOES could have contributed a song in this. Or no, I'd already be happy if just Shura could be played during the last scene with Takasugi. Cos yes, of all scenes that was changed...THAT was one that I wished could have remained the same. Not saying that the movie changes were bad... I'm just biased, and it was my most fav scene. I would've love to see Oguri's version of that Zura-Gintoki exchange about not being able to change a friend and their vow to fight Takasugi. But despite that, the movie did end up being enjoyable. The Gintoki-Takasugi fight also seemed to be based on another scene in anime after all, so I'm don't really hated the changes.
I love Oguri's Gintoki. If I had loved him when the promo pics were out, I loved him more after the movie. He portrayed Gintoki way too well. I almost thought that Sugita was still the one voicing him! Same with the rest of the cast... they really did great. But of all of the casts, Tsuyoshi's Takasugi was the one that surprised me most. Maybe cos it's been awhile since I last saw him act, but I totally dont recognize him at all as Takasugi. Even when I do know that fact. He really pulled Takasugi so well as much as how well Tatsuya had pulled Shishio in the RK movies. Really phenomenal performance!
And I went to watch the Mitsuba-Hen shorts after warts, and despite being short... (Mitsuba's arc wasn't that long anyway) I loved it. Mitsuba, despite being sick was also quite like it's anime/manga counterparts. Yamazaki appeared in this short since he didn't in movie. And... at first I thought Yamazaki was played by Gucchi, but isn't Yamazaki actor was the same one as the one that played Shunpei in Wizard? Gonna check on that later. I wished Yamazaki could have his badminton racket with him in the short tho.
And I actually watched it twice so that I could see again how much they had adapted all the scenes from manga and anime. It's really quite impressive!
Well, in short... DO WATCH GINTAMA MOVIE. YOU WON'T REGRET IT.
