"By the way, Jeong Sabin is opening her used bookstore today..."

Former Prosecutor Kim Soohyuk gave the man a weak smile as he watched Seo Taeha leave. Once the man was no longer in his line of sight, Soohyuk let out a long sigh.

He was trying so hard not to think about it. But he might as well pay Sabin a visit.

It was almost a year now ever since that day when Cheon Jongbeom was hospitalised. And as much as the man's attempt to force himself into a vegetative state had failed, it seemed as if Jongbeom did still get his wish granted. The operation that has been done to save him initially appeared to have gone well beyond expectations—the bullet lodged inside Jongbeom's head at a precarious location had been removed successfully and the patient survived the operation—it wasn't actually very successful. Ever since that operation, Cheon Jongbeom had remained in a comatose state and haven't woken up.

As weeks, months have passed there were no indications given that Cheon Jongbeom would ever wake up. The doctors who were in charge of him had told them to be prepared for the worse. That Cheon Jongbeom could become braindead with no chance of complete recovery. By this point, even Jongbeom's family—or what's left of it—had given up hope. Everyone... except Sabin.

During the last week before Jongbeom was to be officially announced as braindead, Sabin kept visiting him day by day—showing him things that have connected the two of them in the past—in hopes of triggering any reaction from the man to indicate that the man wasn't braindead. She was so adamant about it, that neither Soohyuk nor Jay had the heart to stop her from continuing to keep on hoping.

Alas, nothing that Sabin had done bring about any result and upon coming to that realization, she received another great shock that led to her heart failing again.

Sabin was immediately rushed into the operation room and as Jongbeom—or should we really say Gong Jicheol by now—had wished, his heart was to be transplanted into Sabin's body in order to save her.
What's left for the remaining year had been harrowing for most of them. Upon learning what inevitably had happened, Sabin was in complete distress. For the rest of the year, she had mostly stayed at home; refusing to do anything much less continue to work.

Soohyuk occasionally dropped by to check on her, but there were still other things that he needed to resolve so he couldn't always be by her side. He had decided to become a public defender and resolved to start over from scratch. As in, opening up his own law office as well as rebuilding his resume as a public defender. After a while, he had to say that now he felt more at ease with himself compared to the time when he was still working as a prosecutor.

Somehow, he felt that his late father would've approved of this new path that he had chosen for himself. After everything that has happened to him in the past, this outcome felt like a happy one for him.

He only wished he could say that Sabin had also her own happy outcome as well.

Sabin's friend, Jay kept him mostly updated on her. It was a relief to hear that Sabin did eventually stop having bursts of melancholic and depressive episodes and starting to get back to her cheery self. Even her two 'uncles' had said the same thing. But he'd known better. While on the surface she had looked as if she was fine, Sabin was still in denial on the fact that Cheon Jongbeom had died and his heart was currently beating safely inside her chest. His suspicion that Sabin was still not truly well was further confirmed later on after Jay informed him of Sabin's decision on quitting her job at the NFS as well as her other job as an archaeology instructor. Jay even told him that Sabin had gone and bought the Old Future bookstore in Cheonggyecheon and registered it under her name.

He didn't want to have to admit it, but he started to wonder if Sabin had decided to abandon her current reality altogether. And maybe... even her current identity as Jeong Sabin as well.

He picked up a bouquet of purple tulips, because he thought that Sabin would like it. She did seem to like flowers with purple or pink colours... like those cherry blossom trees in front of the NFS building as well as Old Future. There was no other meaning over that choice of colour—honest!—he just wanted to wish her well.
He kept telling himself that his worries about her were baseless, that there was nothing else for him to be concerned about.

All those thoughts were immediately dashed the moment he reached the front of Old Future.

From the shop windows, he could see Sabin standing by herself inside of the shop. She seemed cheerful enough for someone who was still recovering from a second heart surgery. Yet, what he saw at the moment was nothing short of being comforting.

Sabin was smiling... and was happily chatting with someone. Except that there was no one standing in front of her, and she was in fact talking to no one but herself.
