“And the secret that I have to tell you is that we are not nearly so dumb as we have always thought. Indeed, we each have a brain.”

Haha~ Nice line from a puffin, where... in the Gahoole series were portrayed to be less intelligent compared to the owls aside from their abilities to swim and fish skilfully in the icy regions of the Northern Kingdoms. Any other birds that was grouped to be less intelligent was seagulls. Then again, a lot of other fantasy/animal stories drew seagulls in that similar light~

Finally finished all fifteen books, and I have to say it's an amazing journey in a world written by Kathryn Lasky.

Honestly speaking, if you think the animated movie of the Guardians of Ga'hoole: Legends of the Guardians was amazing, you'll have an even bigger surprise once you started on the books. The movie, was llke an alternate universe to the adventures of Soren, Gylfie and his two friend, Twilight and Digger; later known as The Band, throughout the Hoolian world as they fought against the Tytonic Union of the Pure Ones. But nothing can compare with the books.

The story was deeper and darker, and unlike in the movie, the owls of the Great Tree knew of the existence of St. Aggie but even more of the greater enemy. The legends that were told to the younglings were not those of the Battle of the Ice Claws, but those of a much older legend... that of the great tree's first King, Hoole. Kinda like Arthur of Camelot. But I guess it's inevitable that the movie would be different, since it covered the basic plot of the first three books and the two enemy groups merged. And a part of me was glad that i watched the movie first before starting the books, because there's no way I'd seriously like the movie as much as I loved the books. XD

Main owl in the series had always been Soren, even if in some of the books had been focused on Hoole's story and then Coryn's. In a way, you can't help but marvel at Lasky's way of telling the stories. By the end of the 15th book, you'd realize that all this time it was all about Soren; from when he had watched his sister, Eglantine hatched shortly after his own, to his owl-napping, imprisonment, finding the guardians, training and becoming one.. etc etc until he had grown as much as legendary and honourable as the owls of legends that he had grown up listening about. It's a nice story. Loved it to bits.

And the sheer amount of animals interacting together in the books... I hoped if they wanted to make another Gahoole movie they'd include the other animals as well. It's as magical as the Farthing Wood animals series. For an animal lover like me.. haha~ you bet I'd love sories like this. XD

Especially since I loved the songs, poems, hymns in these series of books. The movie made Twilight like some kinda silly goofy owl with a lyre and singing silly verses of songs. But in the books, Twilight's songs were never silly. They were taunting and amusing and funny, as his taunts were so powerful it's like a whole new weapon that sends enemy owls yeeping away. Digger was not just being cute and adorable like in the movie but in the books, he's a deep thinker and a wise Burrowing owl. The movie couldn't grasp completely the awesumness of Soren and Gylfie~ But I tell you, what the movie did in fact did great--was that in portraying Ezylryb. Just that the movie overplayed it a bit to make Ezyl like Obiwan-Kenobi. And the movie made it too easy for the Band to become Guardians, when actually... it took them needing proper training that lead them becoming part of the Chaws of Chaws, a few more battles and not just for saving the guardians from the trap at St. Aggie like in the movie. Also the breaking of the Devil's Triangle trap was more interesting in the books XD.

Haha~ the movie did indeed felt like an owl version of Star Wars Episode 4. Like the... "Trust your gizzard/Use the Force" or "Fly inside/Let go!" lines. XDXDD And some of the owl terms used were so cute. Like yeep which kinda like being stunned, yarping for vomiting, churring for chuckling, wet poop jokes for dirty jokes, sprink/frink/racdrops for curse words, spronk for the word ban, wilf for shrunk, yoicks for crazy, slipgizzles for spies, turnfeathers/scales for traitors, gizzard for heart, gadfeathers as gypsies, kraals as pirates, scrooms for spirits/ghosts, hagsfiends as witches (or wait that's not cute LOL) and some other words. Like glaumora and hagsmire for heaven and earth.

And if you say that reading books about Owls fighting and being noble was not in any way romantic, you're wrong. There are tons of pairings in this series! There's Streak and Zan, the eagle pair from Ambala; H'rath and Siv; Hoole and Emerila; Boron and Barran; Soren and Pellimore; Lyze and Lil; Noctus and Marilla; Cleve and Otulissa; and some of the other lesser pairs. But I loved Soren and Pelli the most, these two owls was so sweet. You can feel your hearts flutter haha. Like when Soren had been lonesome when Pelli and the girls went chawlet training, when Soren reminisces... and during the few exchanges between them. Especially during the last chapter of the War of the Ember. So sweet~ Hope the lost tales gonna have a bit of Lyze and Lil <3

Getting the Lost tales of Ga'hoole when I can. XDDD The foreword from the dear old monarch already had me. XD
