"Ne, Ryo... I had been wondering. Are you sure that you would really be all right with tomorrow's plans? I mean... for now, mum gonna only stay here for two days... three if nothing goes wrong. She's still not completely well... so this was just on probation but I wanted to make sure—"

"I'm okay if everyone is fine with it. I mean... step—mother... hadn't been so well before... Keii-nii, you don't need to worry about me!"

"Is... it? I guess if you say so..."

Ryo sighed to himself. To tell the truth, he was a bit afraid to meet his stepmother again after four years. What kind of words they would later exchange to each other... what kind of relationship would they have now in the future? How the past... would reflect the events in the future. Technically, there are many things that could go wrong... many possibilities that things could repeat. Still... there were those times—in that painful past, when his stepmother had used to care about him sincerely. Back then before Keii-nii and Shige had not yet been bold enough to sneak him things... his stepmother had used to tend to his injuries with such care later, even if she had been the cause for such injuries many times.

It was because of times like those, that his feelings about that woman tend to sway between love and hate—mostly because he could not discern which of her side was her true side. And partially because he also yearned to be loved by one's mother—he could barely remembered his own. He used to only have the barest image of her from his late father and brother... about how beautiful and sweet was the person, the dimples on her cheeks when she had smiled—his late father used to have that kind of a faraway look whenever he talked about his late wife to his children. It was no wonder that he would start to yearn to feel that kind of emotion himself...

That aside, he had to say... he need to give a good impression. Who knows how much the woman had changed for the better, Keii-nii had been talking about it a lot—he wondered if his stepmother could still be that kind of a kind stepmother that he used to know—before his father had died. How great was it if it was true...

Ryo glanced towards the small box in his hand. Keii-nii had said to not worry about dinner... though he was curious at what Keii-nii and Hide-nii were planning to do about it. And he wondered if he should get a present for his stepmother... hopefully, this was enough.

He had asked to have the present gift-wrapped before sticking a small card on it. Ryo had walked out of the store cheerfully as he anticipated the upcoming meeting later at home. The prospect of starting over on their lives was something that he looked forward to greatly. To finally recreate the image of a happy family that he used to dream about... he couldn't wait for that to happen!

Little did Ryo realize, that somewhere at the corner of that district he had passed by—a small group of disgruntled youngsters had been eyeing him with malice...

One of the boys pushed him against the walls as Ryo felt the air being punched out of his system. He frowned at the number of boys that had rounded him up suddenly; they should at least be younger than him for at least a year... most of them. Some seemed to look familiar... had he ever met them at university or something? Because he couldn't remember ever seeing them elsewhere...

"You think you're such a big shot, huh? Pretty face? Thinking of getting all the girl's attentions to yourself only... acting like a disabled person?"

One of them suddenly spoke, and Ryo didn't like the tone of the topic. Definitely from university, but not for the good reason—what the hell? He hadn't gone all around with his crutch to gain sympathy from people! Much less to flirt with girls...

"Hey, I think you guys are sorely mistaken here. I have no intention to—"

"Eh! You think a few punches would be enough? So that it fitted the image of a disabled guy better, only looking far worse than now! Let see if this guy can act so cool later—"

"Hey, I don't think that you guys get what I'm talking here. I don't want to do anything you guys were instigating—I don't even want—"

"Oi... Oi... don't tell me you're chickening out now..."

Several of the rough looking boys started to speak at the same time as Ryo realised this was getting him nowhere. This group was bent on making him their punching bag; one way or another, unprovoked as it is. Ryo strengthened his grip on the handle of his hand crutch as he swung it towards them. At the opening, Ryo tried his best to run—escape from the group, as best as a lad with two legs and a metal crutch could do.

He managed to take another turn towards the busier area of the market district as he almost felt high with relief. Just a few more strides... he might be able to ask for help...

Without warning, his leg hit on a stray boulder as Ryo fall crashing towards the pavement; his legs suddenly refused to move. He glanced behind him in alarm as he saw the group of young men drew closer towards him...

Erika bowed towards the seller as she walked away towards home. Honestly, her parents could be so random. How could they so randomly decided to have nabe for dinner, out of season? Seriously, it was so funny...

She turned her attention towards one of the street corners as she overheard sounds of scuffling. She looked on to find some of the delinquent boys she used to see at campus—wonders actually at how they can even enrol, being as they were—before noticing Ryo amongst them. She gasped as one of the delinquents hit Ryo before he fought back and escaped. Erika panicked as she wondered what to do...

A worker from a takoyaki shop nearby called out towards her as he saw her fidgeting around.

"What's wrong girl?" he asked as Erika stuttered.

"Ah... err... my friend... Ryo... Nishizawa-san is in trouble! W—what should I do?"

The older man gasped as another came out of the shop, it seemed like they knew Ryo.

"Eh? You're Ryo's friend? W-what... what happened to him?" One of them asked as she struggled to speak without fumbling on her words...

"Just now... it seems there's a gang that had cornered him out. He just escaped them—"

"This... I can't—!"

The other man stopped him as he reminded the guy.

"Wait, Subaru-san... you haven't paid yet!" said the worker as Subaru hurriedly reenter the shop to pay his tabs. She could also hear the worker cry out towards the owner asking for an emergency leave.

But her anxiety did not leave her as she darted first to chase after Ryo, towards the direction that she last saw he went. Before she could though, she slammed herself towards another young man as both of them fell on the pavement.

"What the—" Akanishi Jin swore under his breath as he looked up towards Erika. Before he could say more, his eyes widened as Subaru and Yokoyama-san helped the girl to her feet.

"Come... show us where Ryo went—" said Subaru as the three darted towards one direction as Jin blinked at them, puzzled. But then, the mention of Ryo perked his ears as he hastily got up to chase after them.

"Hey wait up! Was Ryo in trouble or something?" he cried as he hastened his pace to chase after them...

CRASH!!

Hideaki turned around to see picture frame that he had placed on his table on the floor as he walked back to retrieve it. It was an old picture of him, Ryo and his father when they had once gone on a trip. There was a crack on the glass, particularly on Ryo's picture. Suddenly Hide was overcome with anxiety as he hastily left the office towards home. It was just a bad premonition... but he hoped that what he thought did not come to pass...
