So finally I watched it. After a lot of procrastinating~
Quite some time ago... I've been very wary about the plot of Ultraman Saga. What with the hype over some of the AKB48 members to play as a task force team in the movie as well as that new form. That was supposed to be a combo of Zero, Dyna and Cosmos.
Then again, the Ultras in the past have also fused themselves together into taking a new form in order to defeat their enemies. Examples being: Mebius + Hikari, Mebius + Ultra bros, Cosmos + Justice; to name a few. But I always had reservations with Zero. Like him receiving the light from the ultra spark to allow his two i-slugger combine into that big thing, him receiving Noa's power... that supposedly two other forms of his that I'm not sure if I saw before in any side stories etc that supposedly acquired from Dyna and Cosmos (Yeah... during that Ultra Steel promo)~ Stuff. And I'm worried that Cosmos and Dyna would just be some extra distraction...
Surprisingly, this movie was not too disappointing. And I'm glad about it. Saga's appearance is only during the last climatic ending so I could live with it. And Saga's not a Zero upgrade... but just the usual ugly form when occasionally multi Ultrans gattai themselves. Saga just happened to be the ugliest. I mean... if you wanna compare between Mebius Phoenix Brave, Mebius Infinity and Legend.
Well... this review would be spoilerish. But not too much, up to the first half. So if you don't mind~~~
The Movie start with Team U, on the situation on their Earth... where it seemed like they were the only survivors remaining. Cue some inevitable girly fanservincing. I mean... you see them dressing up and stuff, you think? No... I'm not against AKB48, just that... not used to see that in an Ultraman movie. Team U is so girly... the only badass is their leader. But later there's a reason for this, so bear with this for a while.
Seemed for some reason, monsters ran on rampage on this Earth so moving around was risky. It really seemed like a post apocalypse thing.
Jump to the present, you see Zero at some place fighting some robot army, alone. And then some very familiar voice calling him for help, thus Zero went for the alternate universe. Somehow, Seven back at home sensed this and you see the elders discussing the matter about some entity gattering monsters in different universes. Remind you about Beatstar, right? Except this one was collecting monsters. I suppose that's the tie-in with Beatstar plot I guess.
Jump into another universe... hey, it's Mars and it seemed that the colony had grown since we last see it. Yeap, this was Tiga and Dyna's universe. And you see almost all of the Super GUTS team there managing the colony and reminding people about their hero, Asuka/Dyna. Cue sobbing nostalgia~ But then not all are happy about that and we're introed to Taiga, who didn't seem a big fan of ultrans. But Taiga's almost like Asuka in many way that it seemed so cute.
Then, the unknown entity attacked the colony and while trying to protect it, Taiga was dragged into the other universe...
... where later he ended up in that earlier universe and be reckless and Zero ended up saving him.
At this point, Taiga started to be VERY interesting. I said earlier about Taiga not a fan of Ultrans, right? So imagine his reaction when he finds out Zero's inside him. Yeap, unlike Nao... Taiga was very much separate from Zero. Zero just hitchhiking inside Taiga. Kinda funny seeing him refusing to transform to Zero's chagrin. And then... Cosmos appears~ and the guys met the girls and kids~
It seemed there was something more to the girls taking care of these kids... and people mistaking Taiga as Asuka. Well, the same Super GUTS uniform. Not surprising. And then we get some more info on the dire situation on this 'Earth', Zetton and the other head boss.
It's interesting seeing Taiga here... because of his issues with Ultrans (and apparent complex about Dyna) and his incompatibility with Zero. It was amusing seeing Zero so... not cocky and pompous like in the past. I mean... listening to him trying to explain to Taiga about being an Ultraman. Guess all that history lessons doing him some good... eh?
And I said incompatibility with Zero being... when Zero tried to force transformation with Taiga, Taiga refused to cooperate to the point Zero end up having to fight in Chibi form. Hahahahahaha. Damn funny. Taiga-Zero relationship here was interesting... as we learn later why he's so against relying to the strength of Ultraman. (A lot of Zero's pride has shattered in this movie.) And it seemed fated that he ended up coming to the universe where Dyna now reside.
Contrary to my first impression, this movie was NOT about Zero and Taiga. It's actually focused on Shinn Asuka. Yes, this movie is mostly about Ultraman Dyna. And what happened to him since that last parting with Pendragon, what happened to the rest of the Super GUTS team after Asuka went into that wormhole. In fact, most of Taiga's issue was revolving Dyna and Asuka. Even the reason Cosmos and Zero came to this Earth was because of Dyna. And as a plus, we learned that Musashi had a cute son~ As well as some mention of Juran.
For fans of Dyna and Cosmos, this movie was a good nostalgia piece. Taiga and Zero actually play second fiddle compared to Dyna and Cosmos.
Even then, Taiga did end up learning something about what it meant being an Ultraman and deciding his future path as well as Zero guiding him towards that choice. It was weird seeing this not really annoying side of Zero. XD. I mean... with his Ultra Force Zero gang, Zero always gave me this teenager trying to take in big responsibility kinda vibe. So yeah...
This movie made me cry bucketloads because of Dyna nostalgia/partial reunions as well as multiple different renditions of "Kimi Dake o Mamoritai'. So yeah, if you're a fan of Dyna... this movie won't disappoint you.
