Quite recently, Netflix released at anime adaptation of the Ultraman manga, and finally, I finished the anime and might as well write up my thoughts about it.

Well, to start, the story setting is loosely based on the end of the original Ultraman live-action series, on a setting which Ultraman was the only giant of light that came to earth from the land of light. The story then started with the son of Ultraman's human host Hayata Shin, Hayata Shinjiro, who inevitably inherited the Ultraman DNA from his father, who received the DNA when Ultraman originally fused with Shinjiro's father. As a result, both Shin and Shinjiro ended up gaining the ability of Ultraman.

Well, since the anime was basically adapted from the manga, the plot was generally the same. As the anime run was at 13 episodes, the plot basically covered the manga plot from volume 1 to 7, around 40+ chapters.

But while the plot of the anime was based on the manga, it was expected that there would be some plot details that were changed in the anime, compared to the manga. Like how in the live-action series Ultra Seven (who did not take a human host but copied his appearance from another human being) the Moroboshi Dan in the manga (aside from being a redhead compared to the anime's dark hair) was in fact not human.

This part was not included in the anime, even though being based on the manga... there were still subtle hints given to indicate that Dan was not in fact from Earth. There are also other different details in the manga that are depicted differently in anime.

So should fans that grew to like the anime and wanted to see more of the plot of Ultraman, it would be advisable that they restart the manga from the beginning, rather than skip to the volume 7/8 onwards. Since there ARE extra scenes in the manga that were omitted/changed in the anime that might confuse you later on when you read the latter chapters/volumes.

That said, since the story was an alternate take on the vast universe of the Ultraman live action series, you don't really need to watch all of the live action series to understand the plot of the anime and manga. But of course, if you're a fan of the Showa Ultraman series, you'll be delighted to read the manga as the manga does reference the original characters, monsters, as well as some of the key plots from the live action series and breathe them a new life in the manga.

I definitely recommend the manga to Ultraman fans and manga/anime fans alike.
