Having watched the Netflix drama prior to reading this, I was intrigued at the way the novel plot ran differently compared to the drama (in which I was aware that the director had mentioned that they ended up having to change certain parts of the plot for the drama). Regardless, since the cast for the drama had laid a good impression in me, I ended up imagining their likeness while reading the book.

That aside, I love the fact that the novel put a lot of care in including the many details of the many cultures existing during the time of old Malacca. It made for an interesting read, to imagine what kind of life people from that time could have lived as well as learning more about the Peranakan culture. Also, I loved the fact that the narrative in the novel was much longer compared to the Netflix drama since 6 episode did feel like too short, and I wanted to see more of the characters. In which the novel delivered enough.

Regardless, the novel turned out to be as enjoyable and magical (in a supernatural way) as the drama had. Totally worth the read.
