Title: The Ship of Theseus

Summary: In Greek mythology, there is an episode called the "Ship of Theseus". The ship sailed by the hero Theseus, was kept for posterity. The wood began to rot one by one and soon, all of the parts were replaced with new ones. Now, a contradiction appears here. Is the 'restored' ship still the same as the original?

They ended up arriving quite early at the restaurant. Suzu and Shingo too... around the same time. While waiting, the two of them had started to squabble between themselves the way they used to be when they're still kids.
Sano snickered to himself in amusement as his thoughts lingered back towards his youngest.
Recalling back to the letter that he read before, he was amazed at how accurate the diagram had been. As in, the very fact that Shin still ending up marrying his wife in this life just like the old Shin that he knew. And if what was written in the letter was correct, then today... Shin should have great news to be shared with the rest of the family!

Shin and Yuki finally arrived, and it did appear that his guess had hit the mark. From the way Shin had been very cautious around his wife and Yuki's loose dress, it was clear as day to what news they're about to share.
Well, almost as clear as day. Kazuko and Suzu were quick to pick up on the signs... but Shingo was oblivious to it and needed to be told directly that Yuki was pregnant. Sano chuckled as Shingo's antics brought laughter to the table.
"Do you know whether it's a boy or a girl?" Suzu immediately asked. Shin gave an expectant look at his wife before smiling.
"It's a girl," Yuki replied softly as Sano felt a warm fluttering in his heart. Everyone right away offered their congratulations to the couple as he smiled wistfully.
Everything had finally come together...

Seeing Shin's happy face in front of him, a brief thought came to his mind. That the present time that they have right now was the best outcome for his family.
Had the past events were not changed, how much of this would never happen to this family of theirs? In a different reality where his false charge was never cleared, what could that life be like for him and his family?
Shin only ever told him in bits and pieces, and even then he never tells it completely and only when it seemed that there was no other way to express the urgency of the situation.
How would their lives be, had Shin never gone back in time to find him? Would he still have the strength to keep fighting to prove his innocence? When Shin time-slipped for a moment into the future, did anything changed due to his arrival from the past? How many changes to the pasts and futures that Shin have seen and kept to himself till that last moment of his life?
In those other timelines, did all of them still able to be together? Or did in those other timelines, all of them ended up with completely different fates than this?
Somehow, Sano was suddenly reminded about a mythical story that he used to read in the past—of a ship that belonged to a warrior named Theseus.
Now, a contradiction appears here.
Is the 'restored' ship still the same as the original?
"Shin," he suddenly spoke out. Shin immediately turned to face him. "The name for the baby girl... can I suggest a name?"
"Eh, father?" Shin started to laugh nervously as Yuki urged him on.
He immediately said aloud the name that he'd seen written in Shin's letter before. Shin's face immediately changed as he elaborated further on how it should be written. Right away all kinds of emotions started to surge into his chest.
"Father, that's the same name I've been thinking of!" Shin exclaimed in amazement. "Right, Yuki?"
"It's a wonderful name..."
He was almost choked with emotions before nodding his head at them. "You think so?"
The rest of them immediately burst into celebratory mood as Sano's children started to help themselves with the food spread. A sobering thought washed over him as Sano came to a sudden realization.
In order to reach this present outcome, the original Shin had to die in order to save him. Before that, Shin had mentioned how in the future timeline... that Kazuko and Shingo had died in a family suicide as a result of the change he had caused. And even earlier than that, Shin's timeslip back into the future coincide with the time when Kanemaru-san was supposed to have been killed. When Shin returned to the past afterwards also, he had been injured to the point that he could've died if help hadn't arrived. Every timeslip phenomenon that Shin had experienced so far, was also accompanied by some kind of deaths.
If that was how it worked, would it be possible that another death was what caused Shin to first time-slipped into the past?
Sano slowly reached towards his coat pocket as took out the old ring that the original Shin left behind.
He glanced up towards all of his children. Was this how it should end?
The ship is now completely reborn.
Now that everything has come into a full circle, what would that mean for the memories that have still remained in him? Would he finally be able to forget it all and move on?
Sano played with the old ring for a while... before putting it back into his side pocket.
Old memories fade. But...
He suddenly snorted at the silliness of his thoughts. Sano watched in amusement as his children continued to chat and tease each other over nothing.
...we will always be family...
That ship belonging to Theseus, even with all of the rotting parts replaced with new ones—As long as the new parts were made with the same material and shape as the old parts from the ship, shouldn't the ship still be the same as how the ship was originally made? Shouldn't that also apply to this precious family of his?
The family he has in front of him may have changed completely anew, but they're still undeniably... the same family members that he cherished.
His important family.
