Title: Resigned
Series: The Flower of Evil/악의 꽃
Characters: Gong Mija, Lee Woocheol, Do Hyunsu/Baek Heeseong, Cha Jiwon
Summary: She should've done this from the very beginning.

She didn't have any expectations, to be honest. Whatever comes next, she'll come clean about everything.
Gong Mija let out a long sigh as she glanced towards her husband. Ever since the detectives' arrival—no, ever since Reporter Kim has left—Manwoo had been stuck in a dazed-like state. It's finally over now, everything that he's been working hard to keep has completely fallen apart.
The detectives had left for a more pressing matter. Yet she was no longer worried about her own son. Whatever comes next, she'll accept it.
She hoped that Hyunsu would be all right. That would just be fair.

The police came back the next day. Even then, she didn't really have much hope of receiving any good news from them. At this point, the only two outcomes that could've happened would be that the police have succeeded in capturing Heeseong or...
Detective Lee slowly cleared his throat as the two of them were seated in the living room. "I'm sorry to be the bearer of the bad news but—"
"Heeseong... is dead, isn't he? " she started to say as the detective nodded his head. She was half expected that it would come to this, yet it was so strange now that she felt almost nothing upon hearing the news of her own son's death. Despite how desperate she had been prior to this, in wanting to protect her son. Mija glanced back up towards Detective Lee.
"How's Hyunsu? You've found him with my son, haven't you?"
It was strange for her to worry more about Hyunsu, even when Hyunsu might as well be the one who killed Heeseong. As much as she was so sure that Heeseong wouldn't be able to hurt Hyunsu again this time, there's still that time back then when Heeseong did almost succeed in burying Hyunsu alive. It was unlikely, but she hoped that Hyunsu wouldn't be harmed.
Detective Lee's face immediately changed the moment she mentioned Hyunsu's name. Suddenly she sensed a foreboding feeling.
"There was... a situation. When we reached them, Do Hyunsu was about to kill your son. He was in a state of confusion at the time so it took us a while to convince him that everything is fine and for him to leave Baek Heeseong." Detective Lee let out another sigh. "We thought that it was over once Detective Cha managed to get him to calm down when—Baek Heeseong suddenly attacked the officers that tried to apprehend him."
Mija let out the breath she didn't realize she was holding...
"There was a shootout. Your son managed to grab the gun from the officer he attacked... so one of my officers reacted immediately. Your son still managed to fire one shot before he went down but Hyunsu-ssi..."
"Is he hurt... badly?"
"The doctor said that the bullet just grazed his head, so his life is not endangered. Even then, he's still lying unconscious at the hospital right now."
"I should've reported Heeseong in, shouldn't I? Long ago... when I stopped him from killing Hyunsu."
Detective Lee gave her a confused look.
"I should've done that way earlier. Then maybe... so many people wouldn't have gotten hurt. Ms Park... Hyunsu's sister... Hyunsu too..."
She should've ended this all from the very beginning. If only she had been stronger, if only she didn't allow Manwoo to settle things the way he had done... things might not have to turn out his way. This was all her fault. If only she had been much stronger, she should have stopped Manwoo and her son from continuing to do things as they want. She should've realized much earlier that there's nothing she could do to get Heeseong to change.
She should've realised that she'd lost her son already back then... many years ago.
"Can I visit him?" Mija gave the detective a sad look. "I know I didn't deserve to see him anymore but Hyunsu has acted as my son for 15 years. Please let me see him. In return, I'll turn myself in. Not just for hiding my son for many years but also for staying silent about Heeseong's crimes. I'll tell you where I buried the evidence that'll prove without a doubt that Heeseong was indeed Do Minseok's accomplice."
Detective Lee immediately frowned.
"The evidence? What did you mean?"
She let out a long sigh. "It was something I happened to find from Heeseong's room. It was a box with some bloodied nails. There were some pictures as well. I didn't know what to do when I found all of those things... but then I heard something from outside and I saw Heeseong in the rain with Hyunsu being unconscious nearby."
"Madam, do you realize what you've just told me right now?"
Mija stared back straight towards Detective Lee's eyes before nodding. "Yes, I do. I'm ready to face any punishment given to me now."
Because this was the right thing for her to do. This was the least she could do for Hyunsu after she tried to frame him for the murder of Ms Park.

Jiwon had gone out by the time she arrived at Hyunsu's room. The officers told her to keep the visit short so she went in by herself.
It was odd. It's as if time had repeated itself and went back in time towards that day when Hyunsu was admitted to the hospital after being kidnapped by Park Kyungchoon.
"I won't expect you to forgive me. But Hyunsu, please get well soon."
She hesitated for a moment, before extending her hand to caress Hyunsu's cheek.
"I know you said you never cared about what we thought of you pretending to be part of my family, but I did... grew to care about you. The only reason why I acted as if I didn't was because I was so scared that you'd eventually find out that Heeseong had tried to bury you alive before." She let out a long sigh before continuing, "I envy your father. Despite the fact that he was a serial killer and must have tried to make you become so much like him, you and your older sister turned out to be decent kids. Unlike me. Heeseong turning out like this couldn't just be because he met your father. It's our fault too. That should be it. I should've done something before, when Heeseong had shown earlier signs of it."
Mija ran her hand over Hyunsu's hair. "I wished I could've continued having you as my son. I did think so before, when I tried to kill Heeseong. But then Heeseong woke up. Things could've been better if Heeseong never woke up, right?"
"Wake up soon, Hyunsu. And live happily with your family. Don't you worry about me and my husband, just take care of yourself."
Mija smiled weakly to Hyunsu before turning around to leave, only to find Jiwon standing in front of her looking surprised.
"How long have you been standing there?" she asked before shaking her head. "No matter. Just take care of yourself and your family. I'll take my leave now..."
She was barely reaching the door as Jiwon finally spoke to her.
"I heard from my team leader about what you told him. Was it... true?"
"You don't have to worry about me and just do your job as a detective and Hyunsu's wife. Since my husband was unwell now, it's up to me to set everything straight."
With that, Gong Mija exited the room and followed the officers towards the police station.
